The University of Gezira was established in 1975 in Wad Madni City in central Sudan. The university is close to one of the biggest agricultural projects in Africa--the Gezira Project. The school's main objective is to supply the project with high-calibre graduates. It is considered to be one of the leading universities in Sudan. It has a community-oriented educational model. Food security is an important issue of interest for Gezira University; many faculties and departments are engaged in learning and research on food security, such as the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences, the Faculty of Animal Production, the Institute for the Promotion of Horticultural Crops, the Institute of Sugar, the Department of Food Science and Technology, and the Faculty of Medicine.
